We now need to cover off on what major muscle groups are primarily exercised as part of your rowing machine routine. More specifically we are going to outline the groups utilised in the third stage of the stroke.
 
Each of the three stages in the rowing stroke exercise different muscle groups. This is obviously due to the different mechanics at work whilst you are performing the various stages of the rowing stroke.

How much effort you put into each stage determines how much benefit you will get from the exercise. Having the ability to identify the muscle groups per stage then lets you tailor your routine to target the specific benefits or toning you wish to achieve.

The third stage of the rowing machine exercise is primarily focussed on your upper body for strength  and stoke acceleration.  After you have stabilised your core body you are now ready to rip into the rowing stroke.

 It should come as no surprise that the major muscle groups worked here are your rhomboids, lats, deltoids, biceps, triceps and trapezius ,  with your abs and pecs  and lower back still playing a part.  That all sounds good and in laymans terms your upper back, shoulders and arms are in for a treat here.
 
This is easily verified by doing a vigorous ergo workout and feeling the arms and shoulders getting really well exercised. Pretty soon you will start to see some toning results as well.

Translated into the real world, flabby arms, skinny shoulders, and very little upper body tone,  can quite easily be a thing of the past by exercising on a  rowing machine.  Provided you use good technique and your workout is genuine I am pretty sure your friends will be green with envy before too long.
